Is it better to use ice or heat after an injury?

“If the body part injured is swollen, ice is probably the better choice. The ice will help decrease swelling and also decrease pain. If there isn’t swelling, we recommend trying both to see which feels better for you.”

I get shin splints when I run. What should I do?

“Icing and anti-inflammatory medications will help with the pain. Since shin splints are usually an overuse injury, the best treatment for this is rest. Take a break from running and do low impact activities like swimming, stationary bike, or elliptical. When the pain subsides, slowly increase your running distance over time. Try running on softer surfaces and avoid concrete if possible.”
